There was never a Mr Bedfort. Charles Bluemlein built his scripts by collecting real signatures and constructing whole alphabets out of them, and the results looked so little like the signatures they came from that he gave each one an invented name. Higgins Ink showed them off in its catalogs.
That was American hand lettering at its height, from the early 1930s through the Second World War, when New York City alone had about 200 professional letterers. Photo lettering pushed the trade aside and digital type all but finished it. Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos brought the Bluemlein collection back as digital fonts, keeping close to the originals and keeping Bluemlein’s made-up names too.
The lowercase is tiny, about a third of the cap height, so the capitals do nearly all the talking. 1 Regular, 231 characters. Sign off a letter with it, set large.
