In Playwrite IS, any letter that ends in a descender lets go of the letter after it. The pen lifts after a g or a y, which makes this a semi-connected hand, and the font as a whole is modeled on the way Icelandic children are taught to write.
That teaching happens in grades 1 to 3, ages 6 to 9. Pupils start with Grunnskrift, an initial model of simple, unconnected lowercase letters, slightly slanted and with exit strokes, then learn its capitals, and in 3rd grade move on to Tengiskrift, the joined hand. The 2014 national curriculum expects every letter to be written clearly by the end of 4th grade.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione of TypeTogether drew the font as a slanted modern cursive meant for speed. Capitals are print-style, and the M stands on plain legs. The lowercase looks back to early italic and chancery hands; b and p close their bowls, r and z keep an italic structure.
4 weights run from Thin to Regular, with no bold, and a sibling called Playwrite IS Guides adds ruled lines for practice sheets. The whole Playwrite series grew out of Primarium, a project documenting the handwriting models taught in primary schools around the world.
