Czechoslovakia’s education ministry ratified a joined, continuous cursive for schools in 1932, Zjednodušená psací latinka, the Simplified Latin script, and revised it for the last time in 1978. In 2012 the ministry endorsed a second model, Comenia Script, with the letters left unjoined. The 2013 national curriculum says nothing further, so each school picks. Children usually learn in grades 1 to 3, ages 6 to 8, working through copybooks called písanky.
Playwrite CZ is sloped and continuous. Veronika Burian and José Scaglione’s studio, TypeTogether, made it for the Playwrite series out of their Primarium research, and they are clear that it is neither a copy of the local models nor a replacement for them.
Letters to look for
The capitals are decorative. A and H have looped crossbars, the G is cursive in structure but drops no descending stroke, and M and N are built differently from each other, only 1 of them cursive. In the lowercase, m, n and v start on curved entry strokes and w does not, and the q carries a mirrored loop in its descender.
4 weights from Thin to Regular, contextual alternates for the joins, 9 stylistic sets. Google added it in May 2024.
Who would use it outside a Czech classroom? Anyone after a sloped school hand for a card or a children’s book, set big enough that the loops stay open.
