Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Rukopisno pismo is the name of the joined cursive Croatian pupils have to write from second grade on. In first grade they learn print letters and match them to sounds; after that the pen stays on the paper. The rules took shape after 2007, when the Ministry of Education funded a run of research projects on reading and writing, and a handbook by Ante Bežen and Siniša Reberski became the standard for teaching handwriting from 2013.
Playwrite HR follows that model. The hand slants and never breaks, with short loops on the ascenders and descenders, and the capitals are mildly decorative, a few of them shaped to hook into the next letter. The m and the n start without a curved entry stroke, while r, v, w and y each have one. Everything is drawn slow, round and careful, a pace that suits a 7 year old better than a hurried adult.
4 weights, Thin to Regular, from TypeTogether’s Veronika Burian and José Scaglione. A family recipe card would look right in it, and so would a Croatian classroom handout.
