Since the 1992 education reform, Mexico’s primary curriculum has said nothing specific about handwriting models, and teachers pick their own methods for early reading and writing. Cursive is still taught in nearly all private schools and most public ones, next to print letters or after them. The materials, though, come from publishers or from the teachers themselves.
That gap is why local type designers have been hired to make fonts in the style teachers already know, usually close to North American penmanship and most likely descended from the workbooks of the National Commission of Free Textbooks from the 1960s. TypeTogether’s Playwrite México follows that line, and this is its Guides companion by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione.
Each letter sits on printed guidelines, baseline, x-height, ascender and descender, which shows a child how far each stroke should go. Type an underscore and you get an empty, word-wide stretch of lines to write on, which is how a teacher builds a sheet of model letters followed by blank practice space.
