Australia tried to agree on 1 handwriting. In 1990 the Australian Education Council pointed every school toward 1 model, built on the Simple Modern Hand of the Scottish calligrapher Tom Gourdie, so that changing states would not mean relearning letters. The states still teach their own versions of the style, known locally as script, and over the years their 5 main models have come apart in the details.
This is the Victorian one. It is semi-joined: any letter with a descender, other than f, stops and does not connect to the next, which gives words small breaks and a clear, separated look. The f also has the only loop in the alphabet. b and p have open bowls, m and n start on a curved entry stroke, and like the other Australian models it uses an open g. Look also at the z, open with a descender, the plain legs on the M and the little exit stroke on q.
TypeTogether’s Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it as part of Playwrite, working from the Primarium survey of school handwriting. 4 weights, Thin to Regular, and a Guides companion with writing lines.
A teacher in Victoria has the obvious use for it. For anyone else, it is a tidy, legible hand for a children’s book.
