Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Since 2010 German primary schools have had a print-based option. The Grundschulverband, the association of primary schools, proposed Grundschrift that year, a print-style script with a few cursive touches such as small exit strokes, and states like Bremen and Hamburg allow it; Das Deutsche Schulportal counts it in 10% of German schools. Most of the rest still choose from 3 traditional joined hands, and LA, Lateinische Ausgangsschrift, is one of those.
TypeTogether’s take, drawn by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione, is a steeply slanted continuous cursive whose capitals allow themselves some decoration:
- an A with a looped bar, and an S with a straight spine
- a Z with a crossbar
- an X with a double loop, so it can be written in 1 movement the way the lowercase x is
- short, mostly looped ascenders and descenders, with curved entry strokes on m, n, r, v and w
The weights stop at Regular, starting from Thin, so a heading has to get its presence from size. Think 36 px and up for a school poster, and use the Guides version when children are meant to trace it.
