A Note On The Page
Playwrite PE · Regular
A short letter, set in the family.
Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Peru has no national handwriting model. With no curriculum guideline to follow, schools teach whatever they choose: most start children on print capitals and move to joined cursive later, some begin with cursive in first grade, some never teach it, and private schools may import a model from abroad, like the English Sassoon hand used in Spanish-English bilingual schools.
So Playwrite PE, drawn by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione of TypeTogether, had to settle on a single shape out of a lot of local variety. They chose an upright, continuous cursive with medium ascenders and descenders and looped extenders.
Letters to look for
- The capitals are cursive, and F, R and O get fairly complex forms.
- G owes more to American handwriting than to the vertical French cursives.
- The k is built from 2 strokes.
- f drops a straight descender; v and w each tie a small knot.
Like every Playwrite font, it came out of Primarium, a project that documents the handwriting models taught in primary schools around the world. There are 4 weights, Thin to Regular, and a separate Playwrite PE Guides font that adds ruled lines for children practicing.
A practical note. The joins rely on contextual alternates, which Word keeps in its Advanced font settings; turn them on there, and do not press the B or I buttons; the family has no bold or italic and the app will fake them badly.
