Playwrite US Modern · Regular
A short letter, set in the family.
Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

There is no national handwriting model in the United States. Private companies fill the gap, each with its own approach, and the handwriting expert Kate Gladstone has said it is hard to know for certain which models are taught most. Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian, both traditional in style, are among the most widespread, along with Handwriting Without Tears.
Playwrite US Modern follows the other branch. Modern cursive programs such as Getty-Dubay and Barchowsky Fluent Hand are gaining ground fast, with children and also with adults who want to improve their handwriting.
The letters here are fully upright and only semi-connected. Ascenders and descenders are loopless and of medium length, and the capitals are simplified print, with a serif on the I and an M whose center is raised. An odd touch: m, n and r start with a curved entry stroke, a small complication in an otherwise lean hand.
TypeTogether, with Veronika Burian and José Scaglione, built it within Playwrite, the school fonts based on Primarium’s research. It comes in Thin, ExtraLight, Light and Regular and covers more than 150 Latin-based languages. There is a ruled sibling, Playwrite US Modern Guides, for practice sheets. We would hand it to an adult learner before a child, since its plain shapes make a sensible model for tidying up a grown-up scrawl.
