Lanterns over the old souk
Reem is a girl’s name in Arabic, meaning a white deer, and Khaled Hosny’s daughter carries it too. He drew the Arabic. Santiago Orozco supplied the Latin that sits next to it.
The letters come out of early Kufic, the Mushafi models, refitted to the grid of Fatimid Kufic and borrowing some of its shapes. Hosny leaned most of all on Mohammed Abdul Qadir, the 20th century master calligrapher who revived Kufic and set down its rules. Anyone who sees it will read it as old, historical or Islamic, and the designers say plainly that this is a face for titles and decoration.
Ink is the color version. It is built with COLRv1, CPAL and SVG tables, so in software that handles color fonts the glyphs arrive with their own colors already in them. A greeting card or a title screen gets its color from the font itself.
