Pretendard was made to stand in for Apple’s system fonts, San Francisco for Latin and Apple SD Gothic Neo for Hangul, on the computers and phones that do not have them. Kil Hyung-jin started on it in November 2020 and put out the first public version on 28 June 2021.
It is assembled, and carefully. The Latin starts from Rasmus Andersson’s Inter, whose lowercase the designer found too humanist for the San Francisco look being aimed at, so it was pushed toward a neo-grotesque. The Hangul comes from Source Han Sans, the work of Adobe, Google and Sandoll with Jang Soo-young and Kang Joo-yeon. On its own that Hangul runs large beside Latin, which is why people mixing the 2 scripts so often end up resizing one of them, and in Pretendard its metrics were retuned to Apple SD Gothic Neo and the strokes thinned a little. The kana is from M PLUS 1p by Coji Morishita.
Source Han Sans has no SemiBold or ExtraBold. Pretendard has both, 9 weights from Thin to Black, and the project offers a variable version too.
The OpenType set is a long one, 14 stylistic sets in this build, tabular figures, fractions and a slashed zero, plus Korean additions such as corner brackets and an ellipsis sized for Hangul. For the web there are subsets that load only the characters a page uses, the way Google Fonts serves its Korean families, and there are sister packages like Pretendard JP for Japanese and Pretendard GOV for Korean public services.
Our view: for a Korean interface this is the sans to try first, because the size matching between Hangul and Latin, the usual chore, has already been done for you.
