Rain boots by the back door
Nobody drew these ripples by hand. Rubik Puddles comes out of a script, part of NaN’s Glyph Filters, a set of procedural tools that run inside the Glyphs font editor. The Puddles filter takes each Rubik outline and offsets it 3 times, once a little inside and twice outside as rings, then lays small crescent strokes along the inner and outermost rings. That is where the ripple comes from.
The base font is Rubik, by Hubert and Fischer with Meir Sadan and Cyreal, so the coverage comes along for free: Latin, Cyrillic and Hebrew. Luke Prowse of NaN, the Berlin type practice, made the series, and Simon Cozens reviewed the filter code.
It arrived in Google’s library in February 2022 alongside other Rubik filters such as Microbe, Wet Paint, Glitch and Moonrocks.
Keep it large. The rings fill in fast when the size drops, and below a heading the letters turn to bubbles.
