Space Mono came first, a fixed-width family Colophon Foundry released in 2016. In 2018 Florian Karsten took it and made a proportional version, letting each letter have its natural width, and called it Space Grotesk.
He kept the odd details. The quirks that gave the monospace its personality survive in the proportional letters, and the design was tuned so it reads well at text sizes as well as in a headline. That combination is the reason to pick it: a sans that is comfortable in a paragraph and still a little strange when you look closely at a few letters.
Karsten also built in old style and tabular figures, superscript and subscript numerals, fractions, a slashed zero and 5 stylistic sets.
The language coverage takes in Western, Central and South-Eastern European languages, Vietnamese and Pinyin. Weights go from Light at 300 to Bold at 700, with no italics, which is the main gap; for emphasis in running text you will be leaning on Medium or Bold.
It has been on Google Fonts since 2020.
