VIA DELLA SCALA, FIRENZE
Luca della Robbia was a sculptor in 15th century Florence, and the capital alphabet he made belongs to the early Renaissance. Dominik Jáger built Aboreto from that majuscule alphabet. He calls it a revival, since a straight digitization was never on the table: the Latin alphabet della Robbia worked with was missing some of the letters we use now, and Jáger kept present-day needs and technology in view as he filled the gaps.
The construction is odd, in a good way. It is a sans at heart, yet serifs keep half-appearing, either through strokes that taper toward their ends or through ends that thicken slightly, so each letter carries a hint of the chisel without committing to it. The stress is vertical, which belongs to type of later centuries than della Robbia’s.
1 weight only, a high-contrast Regular on the thin side. That thinness decides the use for us: a title or a museum banner, with plenty of size and tracking. In small text the hairlines would disappear.
It came to Google Fonts in May 2022, and the file has tabular and proportional figures along with fractions.
