Grand Exhibition of Curiosities
Walk past a poster wall in 19th century Britain or France and the headline type would have been something like this: Didone letters pushed to their fattest, thick strokes swollen and the hairlines left razor thin. That poster lettering is the stated source for Abril Fatface.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it at TypeTogether as the loudest member of Abril, a larger system of 18 styles for display and text work, and Google Fonts has carried this cut since August 2011. The other Abril weights stay with TypeTogether. The Fatface is here in 1 style, with an extended Latin set that reaches past 50 languages including those of Central and Northern Europe, and with discretionary ligatures and contextual alternates for the odd flourish.
How big? Big. The hairlines need size to survive, and under about 30 px they start to vanish on screen, so give it a magazine cover line or a pull quote and set the text below in something calmer.
