Montserrat came out of a neighborhood. Julieta Ulanovsky drew it from the old posters and shop signs of Montserrat, a traditional district of Buenos Aires, and it went on to need an Arabic partner. Mohamed Gaber of Kief Type Foundry drew that partner and called it Alexandria.
So the job here was matching a wide Latin. The Latin in these files runs broad, a good 14% wider than Arial over the same text, and the Arabic was built to keep company with it across 9 weights, Thin to Black. The family’s description, written in both Arabic and English, splits the range by purpose: light weights for longer text, heavy ones for short headlines.
For a bilingual identity, a café menu or a conference sign in Arabic and English, this saves the usual fight of finding 2 families that agree. The Latin side carries small caps, old style and tabular figures and fractions. Black is very heavy, more for a logo than a heading.
