Scroll through the character set and the chillu letters are all there as their own code points, along with the old Malayalam number signs for 10, 100 and 1,000 and the traditional fraction marks for quarters, halves and sixteenths. Someone took the script seriously.
Anek Malayalam was drawn by Maithili Shingre, with the Latin side by Yesha Goshar, and it belongs to a much bigger project at Ek Type, the Mumbai type collective. Anek means “many”, and the family covers 10 scripts, 9 Indian ones and Latin. Shingre also shared the Kannada with Vaishnavi Murthy, and every script started from a common pool of visual features before following the habits of its own lettering culture.
What you get on this page is 8 static weights, Thin at 100 up to Extra Bold at 800. The wider and narrower widths of the full Anek system are not part of these files, so the letters keep 1 proportion throughout.
In use, we would push it toward the heavy end. Ek Type itself says the family comes alive in the boldest weights, where the terminals sharpen and the joins taper, and a Malayalam headline in Bold or Extra Bold has a crispness that the Thin cut, pretty as it is, trades away for elegance on a poster. For a bilingual sign or menu the Latin sits quietly next to the Malayalam, with slashed zero, tabular figures and proper fractions on hand when prices and times are involved, plus a rupee sign.
