In Baloo Tamma 2 the u and uu vowel signs fuse with ಪ, ಫ and ವ by default, the curl tucked into the letter. Turn on the first stylistic set and they come apart, letter first and sign after. The same set has another drawing of ಶ್ರೀ and a second form for ನ್, the na with a halant, so a designer who prefers the other shapes can have them without changing fonts.
Divya Kowshik and Shuchita Grover drew the Kannada. Kannada is 1 of the 10 scripts in Baloo 2, each with its own name.
Most Kannada letters carry a short headstroke, the talekattu, and here it is a soft hook, rounded off like everything else in Baloo. In the heavy weights it thickens into a little cap over each letter. That is where the face is at its best, we think, on a snack wrapper or a school poster with 3 or 4 words. Kannada has many letters with large round bowls and the Regular keeps them open, so it can go down to a short paragraph, though we would not ask more of it than that.
The Latin brings fractions and tabular figures. On the Kannada side there are nearly 400 extra glyphs, most of them consonants drawn with their vowel signs attached and the small subscript forms that clusters need.
