The city of Chicago wanted to speak in 1 typographic voice, and its design system picked Big Shoulders to do it. Patric King drew the superfamily, condensed American Gothic forms whose height nods to the city’s railways, its public political action and its dance floors.
This is the Display cut of the inline style, the version for big sizes; the Text cut covers anything up to 72 pt. The inline itself, a stripe running down each stroke, came from Chicago’s house parties and LGBTQ dance events, a scene going back to the early 1980s.
It is even narrower than the Text inline, so a long event name still fits across a banner.
9 weights, Thin to Black. Google added it in October 2020 as a variable font, and in February 2025 brought in a single consolidated Big Shoulders family with an optical size axis, from 10 to 72, next to the weight.
On a dance night flyer we would give the stripe to Bold or Extra Bold, where it has room to show.
