Chicago gave this typeface its name and its job. Patric King drew Big Shoulders as a superfamily of condensed American Gothics for the Chicago Design System, and the city uses it as the main face of that system, so the city and its residents share 1 typographic voice. The tall forms draw on Chicago’s history of railways, of public political action and of dance.
There are 3 branches. Big Shoulders itself; a Stencil inspired by work and protest; and an Inline that remembers the Chicago House parties and LGBTQ dance nights of the early 1980s.
In August 2019 an optical size axis split the family into Text and Display cuts. This is Text, which King advises for anything up to 72 pt, with Display taking over above that, and the download holds 9 weights from Thin to Black.
The glyph set here is compact, Latin with the common Western accents. Subheads, transit-style signs and short blocks suit the Text cut, though we would not ask it to fill a page.
