Every printable code point from U+0000 to U+FFFF has a glyph in this file, close to 59,000 of them, all drawn on a grid 16 pixels tall. That is what GNU Unifont is for: when a system has no proper font for a character, it can show something meaningful in place of an empty box.
Roman Czyborra started it in 1998. In October 2013 Richard Stallman made it a GNU package with Paul Hardy as maintainer. Most of the CJK ideographs were copied, with permission, from WenQuanYi’s Unibit font.
A Latin letter fills a cell 8 pixels wide, a CJK ideograph a double cell of 16, and the source is kept in a plain .hex text format, 1 glyph per line, a code point, a colon and the bitmap written out in hexadecimal. Adding a character is about as easy as editing a text file.
Where it falls short
Unifont stores 1 glyph per code point and nothing more, so scripts that need shaping, Arabic and the Indic family among them, come out unshaped. Its own makers call it a font of last resort. The characters beyond the Basic Multilingual Plane live in a separate unifont_upper file, because an OpenType font tops out at 65,536 glyphs.
This is version 18.0.01, from September 2026. Copies of it ship with the X.Org server and in Minecraft Java Edition, among others. A retro terminal look wants it at 16 or 32 px and nowhere in between.
