Set Bitcount Grid Double Ink at 40 px and each of its pixels lands 4 px wide. Petr van Blokland divided the em into 10 pixel steps of 100 units apiece, which turns spacing into plain arithmetic: in InDesign a tracking value of 10 opens every gap by exactly 1 pixel, 20 by 2.
Grid is the spacing scheme, every character the same 6 pixels across, so the file has no kerning and wants none. Double is the stem, 2 pixels thick.
He wrote an illustrated manual for the family and put Python programs for DrawBot next to it, for anyone who wants to rebuild his animations or script layered type of their own.
We would use it where numbers tick over, a match clock or a countdown, and the slashed zero earns its place there. Thin to Black makes 9 weights, and small caps, old style figures and 3 stylistic sets ride along.
