Petr van Blokland asked how few pixels a letter can live on, and his answer is 5 across and 7 high. The x-height needs 5 rows before an a or an e can be told apart, then 1 more row on top for ascenders and 1 below for descenders. Every Bitcount style starts from that grid of 35 or so cells.
Grid is the monospaced branch. Each letter takes 6 pixels of width, gaps included, and since an i or an l would look lost in that slot, they get little serifs to fill it out, in a family that is otherwise sans. Single means the stems are 1 pixel thick.
A practical detail from TYPETR’s manual: 1 pixel is 1/10 of the font size. So in InDesign a tracking value of 10 opens the spacing by exactly 1 pixel, 20 by 2, and you can do the arithmetic in your head.
Van Blokland built the family to be stacked. Within a variant the spacing is shared, which means the same word can go down in 2 or 3 layers, each in its own color, with 1 layer nudged a pixel off to fake a shadow or a highlight. Running LED signs, low-resolution screens, lights in the windows of a building, a LEGO wall: the manual names all of those as uses.
9 weights here, Thin to Black, and the file also holds 5 stylistic sets, small caps and a slashed zero.
