Dario Manuel Muhafara set out to imitate overlock stitching, the sewing technique, in type. That idea is where Overlock’s rounded shapes come from, and they give a paragraph a warm texture.
It was picked for the Letras Latinas biennial in 2006, then reached Google Fonts in December 2011.
Muhafara drew 3 weights, Regular, Bold and Black, and gave each a true italic. The italics are noticeably compact, 8.4% narrower than the uprights across a sentence. There are 2 sets of figures, and small caps live in a separate sister family, Overlock SC.
He saw it in magazine layouts, in titles and short passages, and it does look best big. A café menu or the standfirst under a feature headline. In long text at 14 px the round quirks start to wobble.
