An Astloch is a knot in a tree or in a plank of wood. Dan Rhatigan picked the German word to point at the font’s German roots, and also to keep the woodland theme of Copse, his first commission for Google’s web fonts project.
The starting point was fraktur, with its mix of sharp angles and florid curves. Rhatigan stripped out the thick and thin contrast of the strokes, which left him reworking the joins and alignments and inventing new letter shapes, the capitals above all, that would still read as Germanic once they were monolinear. The result comes in 2 versions, a delicate Regular and a sturdy Bold.
He meant it for display only, choosing big, playful shapes over legibility at small sizes, and we would not argue with that. Keep it for a title.
Rhatigan studied for the MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading and went on to Monotype in London, working on non-Latin typefaces, mostly Indic scripts.
