Kalnia Glaze carries its own colors. The letters are filled with gradients and layered shading stored inside the font, using the COLRv1 color format, so on a web page they arrive already lit, no image needed.

Frida Medrano started from her Kalnia typeface, a high contrast serif with refined terminals drawn from the Victorian era. For the Glaze version she looked at Victorian sash windows, the way their glazing caught light and gave a facade volume, and built that depth into the letterforms. Google Fonts commissioned it and added it in March 2024.

The technical side

COLRv1 combines layers, transparency and gradients with variable font technology, and Kalnia Glaze was an exploration of how far that combination could go. To keep the layered design manageable, Medrano automated much of the process with paintcompiler, a program by Simon Cozens, which kept the hand adjustment of single glyphs to a minimum.

The useful part for a designer: the palettes can be changed in code. There are palettes for light and dark modes, and CSS can swap colors through the override-colors property. 4 icons are included as well, usable alone or inside a frame.

It needs software that supports COLRv1. On the web, in a current browser, it makes a lovely poster headline or product label. The weights run from Thin to Bold.
