The version on this page is the second one. Across 2023 and 2024 Marte Verhaegen and Just van Rossum went through the whole Bungee project for David Jonathan Ross, set up an automated build and did a lot of work on the vertical features and the color fonts. Bungee Shade came out of that as version 2.000.
The family itself is Ross’s tribute to city lettering that climbs a building because it can’t spread sideways. Bungee sets text across or down. To make a vertical word hold a clean left and right edge, round letters such as the O and diagonals such as the A get straight sides, and the L and the I pick up serifs.
Shade is 1 of 7 Bungee variants Google distributes, beside the plain Bungee, Hairline, Inline, Outline and the 2 color fonts Tint and Spice.
It is very wide. A line of it took nearly 60% more room than the same words in Arial, which on a poster is no hardship and on a phone screen is a problem, so give it a lot of space and only a few words. 11 stylistic sets come with it, and Ross’s downloadable releases also have rotated fonts for apps that can’t set vertical text.
