From across a room Fruktur passes for blackletter, heavy and broken and a little festive. Up close the letters are built like an upright italic, and that is where its easier reading comes from, since a true blackletter asks a lot more of the eye before it gives up a word. Viktoriya Grabowska drew it together with Eben Sorkin, and Google Fonts added it in 2013.
For years it was a roman on its own. An update in 2022 widened the glyph set and the language support and finally gave it an Italic, so there are 2 styles now, each with 731 characters and Vietnamese covered.
The designers point it at medium and large sizes. We would go as far as a menu or a short paragraph on a poster and stop there, though the designers’ own note says it works in text better than you might expect. The OpenType list is longer than a display face usually carries:
- old style and lining figures, fractions, ordinals and superscripts
- contextual alternates, with standard ligatures
Shop fronts and fruit crates suit it, and anything that wants the old-world flavor without the struggle.
