The Devanagari in Tillana is 1 of the few true cursive designs available for the script. Lipi Raval drew it to look as if it had been put down quickly with a pen, loops and hooks all through it, and the central vertical of a letter breaking up through the headline almost every time.
She worked on the Latin with Jonny Pinhorn. It does not join up, so it is a script in feel only, though it keeps handwriting leftovers like the hook on the descender of q. Both scripts lean at 10 degrees, and in both the vertical strokes swell at their tops and bottoms.
A few more things you will notice once you look closely:
- most knots in the letters are drawn as open loops, with no closed black blobs
- the base height of the Devanagari falls between the Latin capitals and the lowercase
- the contrast is visible and the counters change shape from letter to letter
Indian Type Foundry, based in Ahmedabad, first published the family in 2014. There are 5 weights, Regular to Extra Bold, with the characters for Hindi, Marathi and Nepali and for a spread of European languages.
It is informal through and through, so we would keep it to invitations, café menus and festival posters, where the Extra Bold lets the loops read from across a room.
