OPEN LATE ON FRIDAYS

Space on a city street is scarce, so signs over corner stores and old theaters have long stacked their letters 1 on top of the other and climbed. David Jonathan Ross made Bungee in honor of those signs. It sets horizontally and it sets vertically, and the letters were drawn with the stacked case in mind: the O and the A have straight sides, and the L and the I grow serifs, so a word running down a column keeps a clean left and right edge.

Tint is the flat color member of the family. Its COLRv0 tables carry several palettes built in, which lets even a basic app show the letters in color without any layering by hand. Bungee Spice does the same thing with gradients.

Bungee was 1 of the early experiments with color fonts and kept being updated as the technology grew up. A major revision by Marte Verhaegen and Just van Rossum, spread over 2023 and 2024, automated the build and improved the vertical and color features; The Font Bureau and Google had supported the original release. Google carries 7 Bungees now: the plain one, Hairline, Inline, Outline, Shade and the 2 color fonts.

It runs very wide, and 11 stylistic sets let you swap shapes around. A vertical banner down the side of a page, or a storefront fascia, is where we would hang it.
