City signs run out of room sideways, so they go up, each letter stacked on the next, on liquor stores and grand old theaters alike. David Jonathan Ross built Bungee to celebrate those signs, and it typesets both ways, across the line and down a vertical stack.
The shapes were bent toward verticality. Round letters like O and diagonals like A have straight sides, while L and I gain serifs, so a stacked word keeps clean left and right edges and reads as a column. It is a single Regular, though with 1,082 characters, Vietnamese support and 11 stylistic sets to play with.
Bungee came to Google Fonts in 2016 with backing from Google and The Font Bureau. Since then it has grown into a family of 7 on Google Fonts:
- Bungee, Hairline, Inline, Outline and Shade
- 2 color fonts, Bungee Tint and Bungee Spice
In 2023 and 2024 Marte Verhaegen and Just van Rossum produced version 2, with an automated build and better vertical features. The project’s own releases also offer rotated fonts for apps that cannot set vertical text, and layer fonts for multicolor work where color fonts are not supported.
