Sam can read the big red sign
A child meets the alphabet first in a particular set of shapes, the ones on the wall chart and in the first reading book, and Daniel Johnson drew Didact Gothic so every letter would come out in the form most often used in elementary classrooms. Literacy work was the point of it. Worksheets, phonics cards, labels on a classroom shelf, and a second-language course for adults could use it too, since the character set goes well past Latin into Greek and Cyrillic, with Vietnamese covered as well.
The version you get now is not quite the 2011 original. In 2017 Alexei Vanyashin at Cyreal went through the entire font and revised it.
Only Regular exists, no bold for a heading and no italic. On a handout we’d make the emphasis with size or color and not miss them much. Oddly for a 1 style face the OpenType kit runs deep, with old style figures, discretionary ligatures, stylistic alternates and a stylistic set among the 1,194 characters.
