Certificate of Merit, Class of 1912
A friend of Eduardo Tunni’s in the printing trade owned an old metal typeface and wanted it digitized for offset work. What he brought was capitals and figures with a handful of punctuation marks, and that was all of it.
Everything missing Tunni had to invent, with the new printing method in mind, and later he added a lowercase and small caps so the face could set more than titles. The result is kin to Bodoni, the weight stacked in the verticals, and stretched sideways a great deal: a word in Diplomata runs more than twice as wide as the same word in Arial. Where stem meets serif he rounded the joint with a curve. The main strokes carry a line of light inside them.
Headlines and short formal pieces, then, a certificate or a wine label. Anything long would sprawl across the page and lose the reader by the second line.
Google Fonts has had it since January 2012, and a February 2023 update grew the character set and added fractions.
