Type a 5 in Wavefont and out comes a bar 50 units tall. Every character in the font is a bar of some height on a scale from 0 to 100, and Dmitry Ivanov built it for drawing data with plain text: audio waveforms, spectrums, diagrams, small bar charts sitting inside a line.
The digits go up in steps of 10, which is the quick manual way in. Letters give finer steps of 2, with a and Z softened at the ends of the run. Programs get the finest control: each character in Latin Extended-A, U+0100 onward, stands for 1 value, 0 through 127.
Spacing between bars is set with CSS letter-spacing in ch units, because 1ch equals 1 bar width. The original project is a variable font with weight, roundness and vertical alignment axes, and here the weights arrive as 9 static files, Thin to Black.
Our favorite use is a tiny audio waveform next to a track title, drawn with nothing but text.
