The chain runs from a novel to a card deck to a font. García Márquez wrote Cien Años de Soledad; someone made a tarot game inspired by it; and John Vargas Beltrán drew this typeface from the illustrations on those cards, aiming to turn their lettering into a consistent calligraphic style that would work as a digital font.
He made the first versions in 1997 and reworked them substantially in 2009. The pen shows in every stroke as it swells and thins, but the lowercase is regular enough to set a short paragraph on a book jacket or a poster.
This is the plain Macondo. The capitals with full flourishes live in a sister family, Macondo Swash Caps, and the 2 work together: a swash initial from one, the rest of the title from the other.
