City signs that run up the side of a building, 1 letter on top of the next, are what David Jonathan Ross had in mind with Bungee. When the wall space is narrow and tall, the lettering goes up, and Bungee was built to set both ways, across or stacked.
To make stacked words hold together, the letters were pushed toward the vertical. Curves and diagonals were straightened at the sides, in the O and the A for example, and the L and the I were given serifs, all so that a column of letters has 2 firm edges.
Hairline, as the name says, draws that system in a fine line, and we’d use it for a poster or a menu header that wants the Bungee shapes without much weight. The words come out wide, so give it room.
Google Fonts carries 7 variants of the family, 2 of them color fonts, and Ross’s own releases add layer fonts and rotated fonts for software that cannot handle color or vertical text. A big version 2 arrived in 2023 and 2024, by Marte Verhaegen and Just van Rossum, with an automated build and many improvements to the vertical features. Inside this file there are 11 stylistic sets and 1,082 characters, Vietnamese included.
