Inkjet printers were the target. Vicente Lamónaca spent most of 2007 on Economica, with help from type designers around Latin America, and the brief he set himself was to save space in printed text without giving up any height, so the letters stand tall and are squeezed hard from the sides. It went on to be the first digital typeface from Montevideo, Uruguay, distributed internationally.
How condensed? A line of it comes out about 30% shorter than the same words in an ordinary sans. The curves flatten toward straight sides and the openings stay wide, and those open forms keep it legible in a narrow column.
There are 4 styles, Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic. Try it in a table header or a sidebar, anywhere the width runs out before the words do. A long read in it is tiring.
