A Note On The Page

Edu VIC WA NT Beginner · Regular

A short letter, set in the family.

Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

Label Print is what children in Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory learn first, a simple sloped print they use from year 1 to year 3 before moving on to Infant Cursive in year 4, and this font is that print stage. Australian states teach handwriting in 3 steps (separate letters first, then a few joining strokes, then almost everything joined) and teachers there have to use the style their state mandates. So these letters follow a model teachers are obliged to teach, stroke for stroke.

Tina and Corey Anderson matched the Regular to a pencil line on purpose. A child copying letters off a worksheet should see a stroke much like the one their own pencil makes, and the whole font is built around being recognized by 4-to-9-year-olds.

The ascenders run tall, with the small letters reaching only a little over half the height of the capitals, which is how a beginner’s ruled page looks anyway.

The set also sits inside Docs, Sheets and Slides, the result of a tie-up between Google for Education Australia and Google Fonts, a big deal in schools that run on Chromebooks. Use the 3 heavier weights for worksheet headings and keep the letters a child copies in Regular. Common math symbols are included.
