Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Playpen Sans Arabic shuffles its letters, so the same letter typed 3 times comes out in different shapes. Every character has alternates, and a shuffler built into the font picks among them as you type, keeping identical forms from landing too close together. The result looks written by a person, uneven in the right way, while the letters stay clear enough for a child to read.
TypeTogether made the Playpen family after more than 2 years of research into how handwriting is taught, the Primarium project. Azza Alameddine and Laura Meseguer worked with Veronika Burian and José Scaglione on this Arabic member. It was drawn with the same tools and the same hand as the Latin, so the 2 scripts feel like 1 person’s notes. In the Arabic the letters vary in shape and the dots and marks shift slightly in position, and there are Ruqʿah alternates for a different flavor of informal writing.
What the files cover. Arabic for 6 languages, Latin for more than 330, 8 weights from Thin to Extra Bold, and a small set of emoji meant as rewards: a star, a thumbs up, a medal, a dinosaur and more. Other Playpen fonts handle Greek, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Hebrew and Thai.
It is made for people who are not designers. A party invitation, a picture book, a teacher’s handout in Arabic and English, a comic.
