Each Handjet letter is assembled from many copies of 1 small element, a modular, pixel-style construction, and in the variable font that element can take any of 23 shapes and slide smoothly from one to the next.
David Březina designed it at Rosetta, with Johannes Neumeier, Borna Izadpanah, Khajag Apelian and Meir Sadan contributing. The reach is wide for a display face: Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Armenian, Hebrew and Arabic, plus Vietnamese, 1,339 characters in all. Google added it in September 2020 with 3 axes, Element Grid, Element Shape and weight. The files on this page are 9 static weights, Thin to Black, with the element shape fixed.
It runs narrow, the letters keeping their height and giving up width, which helps when a long city name has to fit on a departure board in 4 scripts. 4 stylistic sets come with it.
Rosetta warns that macOS can draw it with odd artifacts, so look at it on a Mac before anything launches. For signs read from across a room, stay in the heavier half of the range.
