Iansui, 芫荽, is coriander. The font underneath it is Klee, a pencil and pen script from Fontworks that first shipped with macOS, and once Fontworks released Klee One openly at the end of 2020, But Ko had something to build on. Iansui starts from the SemiBold, since the Regular was judged too light for most uses.
Then came the work of making it Taiwanese. Around 3,000 of Klee’s glyphs stayed as they were, more than 4,000 were reshaped to follow the Ministry of Education’s requirements for Taiwanese use, and over 2,000 new characters were drawn. Among the additions are the Han characters the Ministry’s dictionaries recommend for Taiwanese Hokkien and Hakka, plus common Cantonese ones.
The details are classroom details. Full-width punctuation sits centered, as Traditional Chinese text expects. The numeral 7 and the capital I follow the shapes in Taiwanese textbooks. Zhuyin and Taiwanese phonetic symbols are in, and so are romanizations, Tâi-lô, Pe̍h-ōe-jī, Hakka romanization, Indigenous language orthographies and Hanyu Pinyin.
But Ko had schools in mind, children’s books and handwriting workbooks. The quiet pencil look also works for a café menu or a friendly sign, though the font covers about 8,170 characters of the Big5 range and not all 13,560, so a document full of rare characters may hit gaps. Separate companion projects by the same author add Zhuyin and Taiwanese reading annotations on top of Iansui.
