MacLean’s books have been out of Canadian classrooms for years, but his letters are still there. Henry Boyver MacLean, an educator, built MacLean’s Method of Writing in the mid-20th century on the shapes Austin Norman Palmer had devised in the United States, and added what a school needed, new ways of teaching and exercises to prepare the hand. Schoolbooks from regional governments and private publishers kept those shapes going, and most Canadian primary schools use them now.
Playwrite CA puts that hand into a font. It slants and joins continuously, with some influence from the Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian models. The capitals are cursive, and a few of them, the I, the J and the G, are fairly intricate. Loops on the ascenders and descenders stay the same medium length even on p and q, and m, n, v, w, y and z start with a curved entry stroke at the x-height.
