12 stylistic sets is a lot for a sans with 343 characters, and that is where Instrument Sans gets interesting. Each set swaps out some commonly used characters for alternates, and they can be combined, so the same family can look plain and corporate on 1 page and quirkier on the next, depending on which sets are switched on.
Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Jordan Egstad drew it for the Instrument brand, out of a long interest in neo-grotesques. The source is variable, with weight, width and italic, and the family on this page is the static cut: Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, each with an italic. Those italics take up the same width as their romans, so switching a word over never pushes the line around.
Tabular and proportional figures are both included, which helps in a pricing table.
We would treat it as a brand typeface first. Pick 2 or 3 stylistic sets that suit the identity, lock them into the CSS, and keep them consistent everywhere, or the alternates start to look random. It came to Google Fonts in April 2023.
