EXTRA: CITY COUNCIL VOTES NO
Morris Fuller Benton drew Alternate Gothic for American Type Founders in 1903. Much later The League of Moveable Type made its own version and gave it to the open source type movement, and League Gothic is the result.
It is very condensed. A lowercase sentence needs only a little more than half the width it takes in Arial, which is why it turns up on posters that have to shout a lot of words in a narrow space.
A commission from WND.com paid for a revision, with contributions from Micah Rich, Tyler Finck, Dannci and Mirko Velimirovic, and Caroline Hadilaksono is credited on the current release too. 1 Regular, 469 characters, Latin with the extended accents and Vietnamese.
Set it in caps, tight, for a headline. Lowercase works, but this is a face that was born for the top of the page.
