Roboto is the default typeface of Android, which puts it in front of more than 2.5 billion active users in over 190 countries, and it is the most downloaded family on Google Fonts. A font in that position has to work at every size on every screen, while people hop between devices and resize their browsers, so Google commissioned Font Bureau to rebuild Christian Robertson’s 2011 original. Google Fonts calls Roboto Flex its biggest project to date.
The rebuild pushed the design out to extreme ranges of weight, width, grade and optical size, with a special eye on large screens. Then Font Bureau added something less common, parametric axes, which let a designer fine-tune the letters further still. The foundry had first shown the idea in Amstelvar Alpha in 2017, and with Flex prototypes it showed what it could do for better justified text and for dark-mode typography.
The team behind it is long. Google Fonts credits David Berlow with Santiago Orozco, Irene Vlachou, Ilya Ruderman, Yury Ostromentsky and Mikhail Strukov, and script experts helped expand the Cyrillic and Greek. Testing every glyph across every axis needed new tools, among them typetools and videoproof.
The file you get from this page is the Regular, with Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
Is it worth leaving plain Roboto for? For a product that already speaks Roboto and needs a condensed heading, a heavier grade on dark backgrounds or a properly tuned small caption size, yes; the family stays recognizably the same voice while doing all of it.
