Code 39 dates from 1974, when David Allais and Ray Stevens developed it at Intermec. The name is arithmetic. Each character used 2 wide bars and 1 wide space, which gave 40 possible patterns; 1 became the start and stop mark and 39 were left for data.

Plain Code 39 only stretches to 43 characters. The Extended version gets to the whole ASCII set by writing the missing characters as pairs, so a lowercase a goes into the barcode as +A. Lasse Fister, a font and web developer in Nuremberg who leads the Libre Barcode project, built this font so you can type any of it and get the bars.

Some practical notes:

  • wrap the data in asterisks, as in *Hello*, and the font draws the start and stop bars
  • a scanner set to plain Code 39 may read an extended code literally, so Hello comes out as H+E+L+L+O
  • this version prints bars only, while Libre Barcode 39 Extended Text adds the readable characters underneath

It is very wide by nature, nearly twice the length of the same text in Arial, so plan the label around it.
