Before phototypesetting, an advertising agency that wanted words on a candy ad hired a lettering artist to draw them by hand. The Life Savers ads of the 1950s were done that way, in a hand that mixed typewriter shapes with the slab serifs of Stymie, and Pablo Impallari’s team set out to bring that lettering back. The original artist is not known for sure; Impallari thinks it was probably Frazier Purdy, working for the Sam Marsh Studio.
Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Brenda Gallo drew it with him. The Regular came first, the Bold was drawn in 2012, and an Extra Bold followed in 2013, though it took until June 2019 to reach Google Fonts.
The capitals are tall and the small letters are short by comparison, reaching about half their height, which gives a line of mixed case a bouncy, ad-copy rhythm. There are stylistic alternates, discretionary ligatures and fractions to dig through. We would set the Extra Bold big on a label or a diner menu and use the Regular for the smaller lines under it.
