Material Icons Sharp

Type the word “search” in Material Icons Sharp and you get the search icon in place of the 6 letters. The font works by ligature: each icon has a name, and the name turns into the picture. For older browsers that cannot handle that, every icon also has a numeric code.

Sharp is 1 of the 5 styles of Google’s classic Material Icons, next to Outlined, Filled, Rounded and Two tone, and as the name says it is the one with sharp corners. The shapes follow the Material Design guidelines, which boil common interface ideas such as home or settings down to simple, minimal symbols.

The classic set stopped getting new icons in 2022, and the sharp style lives on in Material Symbols Sharp, part of the variable icon fonts introduced that April. And this one has no knobs: a single weight and grade, no variable axes, no animated fill. For a project that needs the latest icons, start with Symbols; for a stable set that will never change under you, this is fine.
