Type the word home in this font and you get a house. Material Icons are called up by ligature: the icon’s name, typed as plain text, turns into the icon itself, and numeric codes work as a fallback where ligatures do not.
Two Tone is 1 of 5 styles in Google’s classic Material Icons set, next to Outlined, Filled, Rounded and Sharp, and it has no successor. Material Symbols, the newer set that arrived in April 2022, comes without any 2-tone icons, and the classic set stopped getting new ones that year.
What you download is a finished collection, 2,238 characters in a single weight and grade, drawn to the Material Design guidelines. For a dashboard or an admin panel already built on the classic icons it slots straight in. A new project that will keep adding icons is better off with Symbols, losing the second tone.
