Frische Brezeln aus dem Holzofen
In proper blackletter setting, some letter pairs must never be pulled apart. When a German typesetter spaced a word out for emphasis, ch, ck, ſt and tz stayed locked together as ligatures, while fi and fl were allowed to separate. UnifrakturCook follows that rule on screen, as an experimental feature.
The letters themselves are not new. j. ‘mach’ wust took Peter Wiegel’s font Koch fette deutsche Schrift, itself based on a 1910 typeface by Rudolf Koch, and left the glyph design almost untouched. What wust added was the engineering: ligature rules in 3 font technologies at once, OpenType, Apple Advanced Typography and SIL Graphite, built with FontForge and the Apple and Graphite tools.
Ligatures appear automatically as you type. To block 1, say the tz in Zeitzone, which should not join, put a zero width non-joiner between the 2 letters (in HTML, write Zeit‌zone).
It is a single Bold style. It went onto Google Fonts in December 2010, among the first families there, and it still looks right on a beer label or a certificate that needs some gravity.
